Chennai, formerly known as Madras, was the former chief outpost of the British East India company.  Officially renamed Chennai in the late 1990s, Chennai is now a sprawling city of roughly 6-7 million people.  Bordered on the east by the Bay of Bengal, Chennai sits at roughly 14 degrees north latitude and is the gateway to South India.
